I have many, many journals that I've kept over the years. Maybe morbid but one of my ways to reasoning with this mad, mad world... my "Book of the Dead" (AKA: What's It All About, Alfie?")

Wow, a "community" of journalers-- [20 Jul 2008|06:23pm]

no, really, a community? of real people? Be still, my heart!

No one-- NO one-- in my real life journals, and few respect my keeping journals. My  husband really sneers @ it-- but he couldn't deal w/me at all if I didn't get stuff out of my head & onto paper, believe me. I used to just thrown my full journals out, then I got all melodramatic and started burning them ceremonially, but now-- I can't part w/them at all. Maybe it's some kind of midlife thing w/me, I don't know; maybe it's a sneaking suspicion that someday my kid'll want to understand what made me tick/who I actually was. Maybe it's vanity? Beats me, but not only do I keep them now, but I've posted layouts from 3 of them (so far) over in flickrland.

Anybody want to see? Haven't figured out how to upload pic.s here yet (and I'd never do soooo many, I promise!), so go to

if you're interested. I sure hope SOMEbody out there is!

Looking foreward to figuring all this livejournal stuff out,

First time poster [19 Jul 2008|06:09am]

Hi, folks. I've kept a journal for almost 18 years now.

In front is volume one on the left, and the most recent and in progress (volume 19) on the right. It's not as eye-friendly as many of the great journals I've seen on here, but I'm rather proud of it. :) I do have an illustration here and there, but mostly handwriting.

It's really nothing to write home about. I started with a cheapo "five year diary" with a little lock and key that I bought on a whim when I was 15, but didn't seriously pick it up until my mother's suicide attempt on November 3, 1990, later that year. (She's fine now BTW, - it was just the seed that started me writing), My entries were not daily, averaging about 20 per year and only really scratching the surface of my life. In August of 1992 I copied everything from my cheesy cheap diary into a composition book (I call them "cow spot" books), and I've been using those since then, as you can see.

I kept up with increasingly sporadic entries- when I met my future wife all of a sudden I dropped to one or two entries per year, which is annoying in retrospect because that's the sort of thing I wanted to have covered. I got a job as a night shift desk attendant in 2001, and since 2003 I've started keeping a book with me at work, and have been filling in the gaps in my life as I go plus keeping up with current times.

I recently got my mitts on a laptop and have dug into the task of typing it up. (I want to keep a digital copy in case of fire, etc - my kids have a lot of family history in there!)  I've got the first two volumes done, covering 1990-2003 but as you can see, I've got a job ahead of me.  Anyway, all this work on it made me wonder if there was a non-digital blog oriented journal, and here y'all are!

my hand made journal [19 Jan 2008|09:38am]

People wanted to see some pictures of what others do with their hand made books here ya' go

The way I work in my journal is a testimony to why someone should either make or buy handmade. I abuse the s#!t out of my journals. I glue stuff in, I paint thick in gouache, apply layer after layer of gesso and sometimes thick impasto acrylic. I paint, scrape bend and tear my pages to get the effect I'm looking for. A journal has to survive that to get to the finished point. Handmade and Moleskines survive, not much else does.

This journal is stitched up hedgehog style- Irish linen thread and glue. It has 140lb stonehenge paper. The cover is blue cowhide. It closes with an elastic and there is a place marker that I never used and a pocket that I used rarely. Check out the spine shots to see the abuse this has suffered especially the last few pages.

Karma Bites you in the Ass

SO I've been reading and listening to stories about Sen Craig all week. Gay or not, the guy is an asshat. (IMO) I really don't care if he's gay, I'd prefer him not to be, but given his past on gay issues, rights and etc. I guess you could say that this is karmic retribution?

pencil sketched out, inked in with zig, gouched in face, background watercolored in and finally scanned in.

First post. :) [14 Nov 2006|02:52am]

This is my first time doing an art journal and I was pretty limited with materials so it's a bit dull. Regular lined paper notebook, paint, rubber cement, scissors, ballpoint pen, and printed images. All of my pens kept dying trying to write over the paint. Grawrr. I need to go get some new markers. The images are of Bee Suicide and the lyrics are from the song Twilight by Elliott Smith. :)

X-Posted a few places. Sorry if you see this more than once.

I've loved making it so far and the idea of continuing it makes me one happy girl. You all know my expertise lies strictly with journaling of the writing kind, so being able to experiment has been good for me!
Any sort of comment is appreciated so so much. I'd love to here what you lot think, especially everyone from </a></font></strong></a>jr__nal who are amazingly talented and a great inspration. Now onto the pictures!
